Kudos Ace Travels!

And then there are companies such as Ace Travels (www.acetravels.com) who have the guts to put their money where their mouths are. Our politicians could learn a lot from them. Their Facebook page (www.facebook.com/acetravel) is currently a hot bed of debate and opinion flowing from their over 70,000 strong fans. Not satisfied by only leading in the cyber world, they decided to bring the message to the masses.

Yesterday, they put up an advert on the front page of the Kantipur Daily with the simple message "Jyala Pura Leyeu, abha sambidan deu" (you have been paid enough for this job, now give us the constitution).

Kudos Ace Travels! Hats off to you... and I hope businesses, people, politicians specially are led by your example!

SUCCESS: Prachanda says Maoist Lawmakers will take no salary and allowances!

So finally, some of the pressure that the Nepalese people have been asserting has shown results. From nepalnews (read full article here)

"Speaking at an interaction programme organised by ABC Television and Nepal FM in the capital today, he (Prachanda) declared that the lawmakers from his party UCPN (Maoist) will not take the salary and other allowances during the extended time period of CA and urged other political parties to follow suit."

Well said, and thanks for taking the lead, Mr. Prachanda, but you will only gain the respect of the Nepalese people when you implement this.

Nepal is watching you!

Dear Mr. C K Lal

So, Mr. C K Lal decided to attack (with a pen of course) the campaign staged by the Youth in front of the CA at Baneshwor on Friday, and brought out an article on the Republica. What an interesting read - almost as if the new generation of youth and their opinions are not important for Nepal at all, at least the ones that were there on Saturday. Remember that these are the very youth that are being driven away by the situation in Nepal, and the fact that they were there in numbers (Kunal is correct, try adding a zero on that number you have of those present) shows their concern for the political developments in this country! Enough said, counter opinions can be made by readers themselves of his opinions!

More interesting was the counter - from Kunal TB Lama, who was present there, for the full two three hours it took, amongst the crowd, and definitely not one of the young, trendy, slacks and jeans (as C K Lal puts it), but definitely one of the changemakers in this country!

Read both of them here. Opinions welcome here or on facebook, or even twitter. So there!

Kunal's counter first:-

Mr CK Lal

Wipe your glasses and aim your sneering at those who truly deserve, not those whose beliefs and lifestyles differ from yours. 200 to 300 youngsters? Motley? Twitterati? Offensive placards? C'mon, add a zero after the first number. I was dressed practically; if some were branded items, who are you to judge me, US? As for Twitter, confined to 140 characters to express oneself? No, not me, and I'm not a youngster either easily swayed by millions of causes spawned by social networking sites.

The slogans were the same ones shouted by the protestors of 2006 uprising, and again in May last year, this time directed at the 601 who have truly misused their mandate. So why is it contemptuous now? And you are party-politics-other-than-UML-types, huh?

Mr Lal, your ego and your needless grinding down of all causes not in tune with yours has undone my respect for you. Come to the next rally with us. You might just redeem yourself in the eyes of the urban youths - and oldies like me - who are finally becoming politically and socially proactive. Why should it only be you? And, oh, you might just become relevant again.

Lal, Salaam!

And here is Mr. C K Lal's article published on Republica

Staged fright of the inevitable

CK LAL
Once acolytes of Krishna Prasad Bhattarai stopped patronizing Laxmi Didi’s teashop at New Baneshwar over a decade ago, Saturday mornings ceased to be politically significant for the residents of the neighborhood. Politics these days is discussed over rounds of harder drinks during Happy Hours in the evening at one of the various restaurants along the main road.

The April Uprising in 2006 reenergized the minor intersection in front of distinctive water tower as it became a favorite site for protest programs. Since the formation of the Constituent Assembly (CA), all kinds of pressure groups use the place to proclaim their position on various issues of national importance. Last Saturday it was the turn of the twitterati (The Urban Dictionary definition: “The Tweet elite, whose feeds attract thousands of followers and whose 140-character spews capture the attention of the rapt who doggedly monitor them”) to declare that they were angry, very, very angry, with their elected representatives.

It was a motley crowd of about hundred to two hundred youngsters. Most of them were in trendy slacks and t-shirts. One demonstrator had made up his hairs to resemble the famed mane of late-lamented Satya Sai Baba (May his soul rest in peace) and apparently did not believe in shouting slogans. Cheerleaders of the rally appeared to be mostly UML-types: The kind who are protected and patronized by Chakre Milan and Dinesh Adhikari Chari, the Marxist-Leninist strongmen of Kathmandu valley. However, the most offensive part of the rally was the language of the placards protestors carried. It heckled CA members to deliver a constitution, now that they had taken full wages. The contemptuous tone in the taunt was unmistakable.

Lawmakers need not fear the direct rage of the urbanites in white: These marchers would disappear at the first sight of scuffles or possibility of any trouble. City-slickers do not like to get their branded sneakers dirtied in the melee inescapable at any political barricade. However, the impact of their demonstrations upon international community is often far in access of their absolute numbers or the lack of political influence inside the country. The outside world may not know or care that the digital divide in Nepal is so acute that Facebook posters hardly represent a significant section of Nepali society. All that foreign masters of Nepali fate get to see are fashionable faces articulating their views in impeccable English in the You Tube videos. It is necessary to debunk their position for that reason alone.

Naturally imperfect

No textbook method of doing prefect democratic politics has yet been developed. The dictum “Tried again? Failed again? No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better” describes the art of politics most accurately. The alternative is war, which is again politics by other means with its own pitfalls. While it is true that most CA members have failed to live up to the expectations of people who had voted for them three years ago, it needs to be emphasized that a large part of the blame for not delivering a constitution within stipulated period has to be borne by the leadership of three big parties.

Unlike NGOs or business houses where promoters or chief executives usually exercise absolute authority, political institutions have to put up with various contradictory forces often acting at cross purposes. Framing of a constitution is a mechanism of conflict resolution, not a consultancy assignment where the expert must deliver results within the stipulated time and budget or be prepared for the penalty clause of the contract. If honorable members of the CA decide that they need more time to sort out differences between diverse political forces, they shall have it. All that the twiterrati can do then is go and paint their Facebook walls with obscene slogans.

It is also extremely condescending, if not downright disrespectful, to claim that CA members are ‘wage-earners’ in the sense of the term applicable to NGO-operators, bankers or professionals. One may disagree with the politics of Sadrul Miya Haq, Rukmini Chaudhary, Bishwendra Paswan, Buddha Ratna Manandhar and Raj Kumar Malbo Limbu—legislators that have been interrupting the very function they were assigned to perform. However, what they have been doing over last few weeks is in itself an important function of a people’s representative, which includes venting frustrations of marginalized groups in an attention-grabbing manner. Their very presence works as an effective check and prevents the rise of left-wing extremism or right-wing militancy. The twitterati fail to realize that very few of them would be able to save their deposits if they decided to contest an election anywhere except on internet portals where it is possible to be friended by people without sharing any of their concerns or ‘like’ a page before reading its fine prints.

The forced closure enforced by NEFIN turned out to be counter-productive—they have lost some of their foreign sources of funding and their support base has probably been irreparably damaged. Similar fate may await caste-based groups like Chhetri Samaaj or one-person political platforms. But unless a political tsunami hits Nepal, the electoral equation will continue to remain more or less the same as in the CA. That itself is reason enough to give it continuity despite all its failings. To defend the bad against the worst, said an English poet, was the main responsibility during times of crisis.

Accepting inevitable

The permanent establishment in Kathmandu is gripped with the nervous tension of manufactured anxiety. The ruling clique, which stealthily runs the affairs of the state, knows that nothing spectacular is going to happen on May 28, 2011 when the extended term of the CA comes to an end. However, they have to pretend to be worried about the possible fallout of demise of CA without promulgating an ‘acceptable’ constitution in order to maintain sufficient pressure on the political class to continue doing their bidding. Supremo of Maoists Pushpa Kamal Dahal knows that his political opponents have no stomach for the game of brinkmanship and has decided to call their bluff by deciding unitarily for the extension of CA’s term.

Rather than waiting for the denouement, Dahal made his move and stole a march over his adversaries. The moment rumors began to float in Kathmandu that UML would be willing to sacrifice premiership and support Dr Baburam Bhattarai to create a rift in the ranks of UCPN (Maoists), the Maoist Supremo made Jhalanath Khanal cut short his foreign jaunt and return back to the country post-haste. Legal eagles close to Maoists had papers ready for the premier to process through the cabinet and submit to the CA secretariat for the extension of its term by one year. The ball is now in the court of Khadag Prasad Sharma Oli faction of the UML who does not seem to know whether to hide it, hold it or throw it towards Nepali Congress (NC).

The grand old party with its freshly-painted facade at Sanepa, the NC, is even more confused and is looking toward Madheshbadis to make a counter move. Dahal has acted and now it’s up to anti-Maoist forces to react. The problem with reaction is that no matter how well thought out, it ends up appearing reactionary.

Anti-Maoist forces in the legislature now have three choices, each of them equally unpalatable and fraught with immense risks. Should they choose to actively oppose the move, a division in the ranks of UML would be inevitable. Failing to garner the support of two-third of existing members in the parliament, the bill to extend CA’s life will then fall short of required majority and the house shall stand dissolved. With no other alternative, the government will remain in place until next elections are held. Such an eventuality will be suicidal for NC, which then may invite presidential intervention and get mired in the quicksand of authoritarian politics.

Should NC decide to just keep quiet and let the term of CA lapse due to internal contradictions within the UML, Maoists will lose no time in forming an anti-democratic alliance with the support of a section of Nepal’s permanent establishment that believes in the power of coercive politics to maintain it control over resources of the state. The establishment may later discover that Maoists are as undependable allies as Marxist-Leninists, but it will be too late by then.

The NC can decide to support Maoists, but then their posturing of all these months will begin to look foolish. Compared to the ham-handed manner he had played his cards last May prior to the imminent dissolution of the legislature, Dahal has been remarkably skilful this time round. But dexterity alone is not enough in mainstream politics; it needs to be combined with magnanimity to be truly effective.

The direction of future politics will depend upon the kind of deal Maoists are ready to offer to NC leadership looking for any piece of scrap to hide their faces. The Facebook crowd can then go, eat cheesecakes, have a beer party and dance the night off in celebration of the extension of CA’s tenure

NO WORK, NO PAY

The message was loud and clear from the youth on Saturday, 14th May in front of the same BICC, where lawmakers have in three years been unable to produce anything credible in the form of a constitution. We hear that a lot of it has already been written, and only some sticky issues remain.
But come on! Which Nations Constitution in the world is really complete? Why cannot this draft be declared the first draft, so that we can move on?

Nepal Unites FAQ's

1. Who are we?

What we are.

We are an informal group of concerned Nepali citizens that came together to raise our voice against the apathy and indifference shown by the political establishment, particularly our senior politicians who have time and again proven their incompetence and dishonesty. We are doing this to demand accountability of our senior politicians who must prioritize and meet people’s aspirations – peace, democracy, development, and economic growth.

What we are not.

We are not a formal organization.
We are not a political organization.
We are not an NGO.
We are not projecting ourselves as LEADERS nor have any political ambitions.

2. Our Core Values

Non-Violence-We do not endorse violence as a means to protest. All our programs are non-violent, voluntary, and strive to cause the least discomfort to general public.

Non-party Political- The group has no political leaning whatsoever but it does strongly believe in the political rights of individual citizens.

Independent- We do not get funding from any donors, I/NGO or company. The resources come from ordinary Nepalis who support us voluntarily.

Transparent-The activities of the group and the individuals involved are open to public scrutiny. We share all relevant information on web in full public knowledge.

Shared Leadership- All our decisions are collective. We believe in shared leadership.

Transformational Change: We believe we need to change ourselves too. We cannot always point our fingers and expect others to change. How about asking ourselves “Maybe we need to start doing things differently?”

3. Our Role (in relation to the current campaign)

Building public pressure on senior politicians and parliamentarians to respond to the basic needs and aspirations of the people

A. We design and implement popular campaigns so that our voice – the voice of ordinary citizens –gets heard loud and clear by the politicians.

B. We provide public space, largely social networking sites, for people to vent their frustration and opinion in a non-violent way.

C. We approach civil society members and leaders to encourage their active participation to increase the campaign’s impact.

4. Our Current Campaign

Constitution and Peace Process – timely conclusion

We understand the significance of writing a good constitution and finding ways to sustain peace in our country. We also know that these imperatives are noble and they need time to complete. But we strongly believe that the ongoing endless delays are not based on genuine needs. The politicians have failed to deliver, because of their incompetence and dishonesty. This is not acceptable. This must change and we must get out of this chaotic state. Step one is to have our constitution in place by the date stipulated by these same political parties.

If the date is extended again, our condition is that the 601 Constituent Assembly members not be paid any more. The delay is not necessarily due to lack of intent or action on the part of ordinary CA members. We understand that. Yet as leaders of their constituencies in their own rights these CA members are primarily accountable to the people, and in that vein, following globally acceptable practice of NO WORK NO PAY, they should not receive any remuneration/allowances beyond the already year-long extension that terminates on May 28, 2011. We urge them to put pressure on their own leadership to complete the last few steps of the process as soon as possible.

Peace building is an integral part of finalizing the constitution. Most of the critical steps in this direction have already been taken in last several years. The final few steps – we strongly believe – are deliberately obstructed by the senior politicians to perpetuate their grip on the state-power and financial resources. We do not accept “Peace Building” as the continued excuse for delaying the Constitution drafting process. Both these issues are interrelated and must be completed by the stipulated time. If they cannot, they need to step aside and let other more capable, dedicated, and educated Nepalis play a role.

5. Our Change Agenda beyond the Current Campaign

I: The Youth of Nepal must be given bigger and better opportunities

Nepal is a young country. The median age of Nepalis is less than 21 years. Because of strong growth in the availability of education, the youth of today are much more capable and competent. As benefactors of the communication revolution they also have a much more balanced world-view. Right from politics to other sectors, Nepali youth deserve a much better and bigger opportunity. This will help just not the youth but the entire country. We want this group to step up.

II: Bringing Economy to the forefront

The wounds of the decade-long conflict are still healing. As a country we paid a huge cost for reaching where we stand today but we also created a stronger base for an inclusive society. In this backdrop, the country has remained largely and exclusively entangled in political debates for more than a decade now.

But we must move on now. Lack of livelihood opportunities is forcing hundreds of thousands of our young population to move to foreign countries every year. The urban youth is struggling with lack of employment opportunities and low pay. Inflation is soaring and the economy is almost stagnant. This while both our neighbors, China and India are attaining double-digit economic growth year after year, and much of South Asia is growing at a phenomenal rate. Nepal is however going backwards. The electricity and fuel situation is worsening by the day. Law and Order has never been this bad. All these are further damaging our economy.

People want work – they want livelihood opportunities. The political theories do not feed them. The 21st century youth understands such philosophies very quickly- they do not need years of convincing. The citizens are growing sick and tired of listening to political philosophies while their lives are becoming more and more difficult and challenging. This must change and the politicians must be made accountable for creating JOBS, LIVELIHOOD OPPORTUNITIES –their primary job in any democratic country. Handling the economy must become one of their prime agenda and their performance must be linked with what they deliver on the economic front.

III. Denouncing and protesting against all forms of Corruption

We denounce CORRUPTION in no uncertain terms. We want to provide platform for people to protest all forms of corruption- those by the people-in-public-office, those in private sector and social sector OR a collusion of them all.

This disease is not letting the country reap any benefits of the political transition. Transformational change is the need and that requires us to change our own behavior too as citizens.

5. Our Activities and Plans

Our Activities and campaigns evolve with time depending on the needs of our society and the political response to our demands. For more on this stay tuned to our Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/nepalunites

6. Collaboration with other groups and individuals

Nepal Unites encourages general people and leaders of the civil society members to support its campaigns, or alternatively devise and implement their own campaigns to amplify public opinion- strongly and effectively. The group is eager to work with all such individuals and groups that share the core values, campaign ideals and agenda of the group.

7. Our Structure and Functioning

A. Change Makers (Parivartak):

All our active members are change-makers (Parivartaks)

Three tiers- ‘The Facilitators’, ‘The volunteers’ and ‘The alliance’

I. The Facilitators of Parivartaks comprises of a limited number of people in order to allow for quick response time and swift decision-making.

II. The Volunteers of Parivartaks are web-based supporters (bloggers and social networking contributors) and real-world campaign supporter who organize events. They all are the champions and volunteers of the campaigns.

III. The Alliance of Parivartaks are people from different walks of life who are keen to help, and will actively engage and provide support to expand and strengthen the campaign.

B. The Role of the Core Group of Parivartaks.

1. Endorsing campaigns, tactics and activities
2. Overseeing the larger group of change maker volunteers
3. Raising and managing resources and
4. Expanding and consolidating input from the Change Makers alliance

C. The Common Campaign Ideals and Slogans and Campaign Execution:

The Core group will endorse and provide common campaign ideals/slogans/activities to the broader group of change-makers.

The functioning of the campaign will largely remain a flexible process so that quick changes in plans and tactics can be made easily.

D. The Media

The media support, conventional as well as on-line, is critical for the success of the campaign. The members of the Media are encouraged to talk to the parivartaks andcover their opinions extensively. Parivartaks will proactively write articles in conventional media and on blog-sites.

F. Celebrity Engagement

Nepal Unites will urge popular celebrities of Nepal to join the campaign and to lend their voice.
